Jamie S Adventure Begins With His Summer Holiday At Aunt Jane S Flamingo Pink Cottage And The Twist Of A Key In An Old Wooden Grandfather S Clock He Can T Believe He Is Faced With The Challenge Of Chime Or The Doom That Will Come If He Does Not Complete All The Challenges Ahead Of Him Successfully Jamie Delights In Meeting His New Friends Especially The Time Keeper Who Explains How He Is The Chosen Guest In Their Enchanted Land The Evil Time Taker Has Quite A Different Plan And Is Determined To See Jamie Fail His Mission He Plots To Take The Crown Of Cogs From The Time Keeper And Will Not Tolerate Any Child Getting In His Way This is a children s story, with an enchanting and imaginative plot that I m sure children will love However, the voice of the 10 year old narrator is indistinguishable from the voices of adult characters and narrators His word choices do not seem like words a boy his age would use for example, he says he is feeling angst While it is quite possible that the boy is supposed to be precocious in his vocabulary, it would be effective if there was some reference to it and also if his voice was distinctive from others I also found many distracting errors Narrative sentences ended in question marks words were missing or used incorrectly symbols for cymbals, for example in some cases words were repeated There were many run on sentences separated by commas or no punctuation at all The point of view shifted from first to third person and from character to character frequently, sometimes confusing me If I was confused, I can only imagine that children would be confused as well This is a really intriguing and creative story that is not executed as well as it could be Some careful editing could remove many of the distracting errors, and developing distinctive voices for individual characters would be a huge improvement Jamie should either have a vocabulary that sounds like a child or there should be indication that he is precocious in his vocabulary This story could be so much better if the author s technical skills were half as good as her imagination.
