I feel like I need to dye my hair red and start hanging out in Detroit dive bars.Pledge of Ashes is just the sort of book you sit down with on a cold Detroit day and before you know it, it s dark out and you are at the end of the book and begging for of the story Syd s tough girl exterior and internal conflict with her own powers are no match for Devon and his bad boy image with a soft spot for his new ward This spin on the supernatural is not your over worked vampire, witch and werewolf lit It s edgy, funny and keeps you wanting from beginning to end I can NOT wait for the second book and I am begging Ian Somerhalder to play Devon when it hits Hollywood. Now if you ll excuse me, I have to go dye my hair back to read and make a list of Detroits darkest dive bars to start hanging out in

Oh, how I loved this book Let me start by saying that this is not my typical genre I have hard time connecting to characters and settings that I don t believe, or can t trick myself into believing could be real I know I m in the minority, as fantasy is a hugely popular genre, but I say this to emphasize the power this book had over me.Sydney Hoven is not your typical character She s a strong, sarcastic, rough around the edges woman usually a fool proof recipe for an unlikeable character Admittedly, she is somewhat unlikeable, but the author s superb character development skills make her so relatable, it took little time to empathize with her Chapter after chapter we delve a little deeper into the makings of this complex character until we can t help but to cheer her on during every step of her bizarre journey.Speaking of characters, oh Devon I m not the swooning type, but this guy turned me into a swooning puddle of mush He s such a strong, charming, and vivid character that I found myself hoping and praying he could be real and that he d show up on my doorstep Don t tell my husband that A psychic storyline is always intriguing, but what sets this book apart is Syd s insistence on abandoning her powers She just wants a normal life and it seems she s taking steps in the right direction until she meets Devon.Hunky, sexy, far too tempting Devon. As a testament to Syd s strength, she does quite the job resisting this total package man.The kicker is that he isn t just any hunky, sexy, far too tempting guy No He s an angel sent to protect Syd and help her hone the powers she s so desperate to lay to rest Her refusal would have dire consequences for all of humanity, giving Hell victory over Heaven.A few surprise twists and a lot of action coupled with all of the above make this book a winner, but what really drew me into a story so unlike what I usually read is the incredible attention to Syd s character Layer after layer, she becomes so incredibly real I can feel her scars and trust me, this poor girl has plenty.Needless to say, I can t wait for the next book in the series Hands down, 5 of 5 stars Actually, can I give it a 6 What the heck 6 of 5 stars

There were so many things to love about this book A heroine with psychic abilities that works as an auto mechanic, fantastic world building in metro Detroit, and hunky archangels raring to kick some demon ass This premise drew me right in Syd thought her life had been overturned when her parents died, but the changes keep coming Her chance encounter with two brooding strangers in a bar puts her on a path of self discovery that she is hesitant to travel She had kept her abilities quiet but now there are those who know what she can do There are forces at work that she is only beginning to understand Having no one else to turn to, she puts her life in the hands of the two handsome strangers, who are nearly as dangerous as the men she must avoid.Lovers of Urban Fantasy will definitely want to check out this series The characters are well developed and likable, even the gruff ones This is an amazing debut by an author you will want to keep your eye on

Good reading I was recommended this book from a friend Her sister in law is the author I started it thinking I was doing her a favor, but realized pretty quickly she did me a favor by telling me about it It s a great read from beginning to end, and I was so happy to hear it s just the first one The characters are well written I wish I had a Devon in my life too Highly recommend if you like supernatural stories.
