Philip Whiteland has done it again A Kick at the Pantry Door is rib tickling fun, sure to bring a smile to the most dour face And I cannot express enough appreciation to the author for revealing within the pages the most perfect gift to give the impossible to buy for man in my life A highly recommended, light read for anyone who enjoys a good laugh at themundane realities of life. This is a series of reminiscences, linked together as though it s a menu This relates to the author s mother s expression, when asked what was for dinner, A kick at the pantry door The author is a classic raconteur and his observational wit makes these stories both accurate an amusing We hear about his school days, about his paper round and his first job I remember many of the things he talks about and for those much younger, it s a lesson in what life was like before all the technology we re now used to.Throughout the book, the stories come closer to the present day and we find the author and his wife in a notoriously slow restaurant and on a cruise ship holiday The only beef for me was that there was a chapter of another book at the end, something I never read and find unnecessary There are already links to the author s other books and it always smacks of padding. If you re old enough late 50s and 60s should see you nodding and smiling here you ll find a lot of memories rekindled If you re not, read this and have a laugh finding out how your parents lived Oh my goodness, I was sent on a trip down memory lane with this book alright What can I say, I loved it, it was fabulous If, like me you were born in the 50s and grew up in the 60s, you will associate very strongly with it Very nostalgic, very very funny, it really tickeled me thats for sure The journey in the smoke filled car, yep, been there, even down to the plastic balloon thing, that we thought was so cool when we got it from the Ideal home exhibition there are so many things that just clicked with me, and I don t want to give too much away I think I am a committed fan of Philip Whiteland from this day forth Thanks for the memory. The world seems a good deal larger when you re small and, apparently, far from home Chocolate cake helps, of course These cute stories can t help from send you into a giggling fit I really enjoyed the easy language and the fun escape The descriptions made me laugh out loud as the writer described experiences from his past I couldn t help but chuckle as he went through the names of dog treats he used to sample with his friends, his moms less than desirable baking, music lessons in which he pretended to play his instrument, his paperboy, adventure, cruising and road trips he used to take with his family. The writing is sharp, clever and engaging I was thoroughly entertained throughout this upbeat adventure ride Car travel in the 1950s and 1960s was something of an overrated past time, particularly if you were of the infant persuasion Summer days were a nightmare for those of us wearing short trousers, still de rigueur then, as you were in danger of third degree burns to the back of your legs from the red hot plastic If you could survive this, then you still had the unpleasantness of extricating yourself from the seat at the end of the journey, by which time your legs had been welded to the seat by a mixture of heat and pressure, and could only be removed with a worrying tearing noise.
