Dreams of a better life in America give Mei Ling the strength to endure the treacherous journey and detainment on Angel Island. But when she finally reaches San Francisco, she’s met with a surprise. Her husband, Chinn Kai Li, is a houseboy, not the successful merchant he led her to believe.

Mei Ling is penniless, pregnant, and bound to a man she doesn’t know. Her fragile marriage is tested further when she discovers that Siew will likely be forced into prostitution. Desperate to rescue Siew, she must convince her husband that an orphan’s life is worth fighting for. Can Mei Ling find a way to make a real family—even if it’s built on a paper foundation?

Any Resemblance to a Coincidence Is Accidental by Stephen C. Bird

Surreal, way-beyond-prime-time satire. Iconoclastic, politically incorrect, non-linear, over-the-top and jam-packed with losers. Experimental scenarios blend humor and horror. Emotionally disconnected characters shuttle between their waking and dreaming lives. Superficial silliness juxtaposed with deeper, darker sociological and philosophical commentary. Profane, funny fiction for adults with open minds.

ABOUT RNWY

The year is 2399. Humans' “biological clocks” have been stopped for more than 250 years, freeing humanity from aging and death. AIs have rights, and can even acquire full citizenship.

It’s also fashion week. Antisocial fashion editor Pablo Starr — who runs Space Fashion Week, via RNWY — is bored and depressed, as usual. He has endless riches, and (like everyone in 2399) doesn't age, but he's been searching for his lost love for almost 100 years.

Meanwhile, supermodel-turned-reality star Samantha (of mean-spirited holo show Samantha!) is trying to make a name for herself as an inventor, but she's mocked by the media and her shallow co-workers.

Their lives are connected, and changed, when DOS, an antiquated robot, crashes the Chanel show looking for Samantha.

DOS has a wild story: his owner has been abducted by a Sention sim (a lifelike android made by Fashion Robotics), and Pablo will be next.

Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas

Enter for your chance to win an Advance Reader's Edition CATHERINE HOUSE, the gothic-infused debut by Elisabeth Thomas.

Trust us, you belong here.

Catherine House is a school of higher learning like no other. Hidden deep in the woods of rural Pennsylvania, this crucible of reformist liberal arts study with its experimental curriculum, wildly selective admissions policy, and formidable endowment, has produced some of the world’s best minds. For those lucky few selected, tuition, room, and board are free. But acceptance comes with a price. Students are required to give the House three years—summers included—completely removed from the outside world. Family, friends, television, music, even their clothing must be left behind. In return, the school promises a future of sublime power and prestige, and that its graduates can become anyone or anything they desire.

Among this year’s incoming class is Ines Murillo, who expects to trade blurry nights of parties, cruel friends, and dangerous men for rigorous intellectual discipline—only to discover an environment of sanctioned revelry. For Ines, it is the closest thing to a home she’s ever had. But the House’s strange protocols soon make this refuge feel increasingly like a gilded prison. And when tragedy strikes, Ines begins to suspect that the school—in all its shabby splendor, hallowed history, advanced theories, and controlled decadence—might be hiding a dangerous agenda.

InsectInside by Paul Manganaro

A dark, disturbing tale.

Has someone ever tried to trap you in a parasitic relationship?

Clair is an intelligent researcher. Before Adam knocks on her door she is in his trap. Adam is a parasite who selected her for his use. He addicts her to a cocktail of drugs to make her feel she is in love. Then he takes away her friends, her occupation and strips her of her identity. He turns her into his slave. All seems lost until Clair’s estranged daughter Diana comes for a visit. Diana is a powerhouse; a fighter who pits herself against Adam. Adam and his brothers are out to destroy the world and Diana is out to stop them.

On the surface, this is a story about monsters and horrors. At its core, it’s a story about relationships. An interplay of complex characters that questions that thing called love.

I was inspired to write this story after reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula. A dark story describing a plague of death. Written in 1897, the sensibilities of the times demanded a strict moral code. In Stoker’s novel the subject of sex is made conspicuous by its absence.

I chose a different presentation in this tale. Although there are no vampires, there is a great deal of biting and blood. The evil creatures are parasites, keeping their human hosts alive until they have fulfilled their purpose.

For adults only, this novel contains graphic sexual depictions.

Hideous Exuberance by Stephen C. Bird

The predecessor / doppelgänger / kindred spirit of “Catastrophically Consequential”. Incongruous, inappropriate, preposterous; trashy, explicit, poetic, phantasmagorical. Blasphemous, impressionistic, inflammatory; outrageous, unstructured, inane. A highbrow-lowbrow, comic-fantasy-nightmare. A flamboyant, surrealistic, experimental reaction to the random nature of existence. It's the book your parents raised you not to write.
